I also remember bei...Such emotion in this painting! I also remember being struck by it in the Tretyakov book. At first I did a double take when I realized the "ground" was a sea of grain. Peace and plenty! It was a long time before I realized the mountain in the BG is a huge pile of unthreshed grain. Brilliant decision to backlight the subject so that the white shirt glows with warmth from below and coolness from above. The original is nearly 7 feet by 13 feet.
